Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre
About the project
JMac was engaged by Brisbane City Council to deliver the Karawatha Forest Discovery Centre, a multi‑building community hub designed to support school programs and local groups through interactive learning and nature‑based experiences.
Scope
Construction of three buildings featuring an interactive display area, facilities for the Karawatha Forest Protection Society, a meeting room, theatre, amenities, and an outdoor classroom/picnic space, along with a new façade.
Delivery of new shelter structures equipped with electric BBQs.
Construction of a nature‑inspired playground incorporating mulch and sand soft‑fall, logs, rock sculptures, boardwalks and timber bridges.
Installation of a water feature.
Supply and installation of site furniture including bollards, fencing and gates, bin enclosures, drinking fountains, street signage, and custom timber tables, seats and benches.
Construction of a new carpark accommodating up to 50 vehicles plus a dedicated bus turning bay.
Pavement works comprising 3000m² of asphalt, 1700m² of coloured concrete footpath, and 450 m² of bush mate asphalt.
Planting of 20,000 plants and 100 trees, along with full turf installation.
Installation of hydraulics, electrical, communications, CCTV, air‑conditioning, hearing loop and AV systems.
Outcomes
JMac minimised vegetation removal throughout the project and engaged environmental consultants to safely manage landfill remediation. Working closely with Brisbane City Council, the team maintained full compliance with erosion and sediment control requirements, achieving zero non‑conformances.
Sustainable design initiatives were also incorporated, including rainwater‑fed toilet systems and solar panels to help reduce energy consumption. The nature play area was constructed using materials and forms inspired by the surrounding environment, delivering a natural, immersive alternative to traditional playground equipment.
