Melbourne Zoo

Melbourne Zoo spans 55 acres and is home to more than 320 animal species and a number of heritage-listed buildings. As part of its vision to be the world’s leading zoo-based conservation organisation, the zoo undertook upgrades to modernise animal enclosures and enhance visitor experiences.

JMac was contracted to upgrade lemur island, the meerkat enclosure and the predator precinct. The project also included construction of a new children’s learning hub overlooking the landscaped gardens and pathways, providing a vibrant play haven for families.

Lemur Island - JMac implemented strict exclusion zones to protect adjacent heritage listed walls from plant movement and construction activities.

Meerkat enclosure - The construction involved working in the oldest area of the zoo where it revealed previously filled ground over an old creek line. To create a workable foundation, the team conducted additional earthworks and imported controlled fill materials. The exhibit wall footing was also redesigned, and concrete piers were installed to provide additional stability, ensuring a safe and durable outcome for visitors and wildlife alike.

Predator precinct - JMac delivered the project to a high standard with carefully planned programming to minimise disruption to zoo operations and maintain public access. To ensure public safety, traffic controllers were deployed to escort all vehicles and plant through the zoo.
