About the project
JMac was engaged to deliver the upgrade of Plantation Park in Ayr, North Queensland, transforming the area into a fortress themed lookout with nature-based elements. The project was designed to provide an engaging recreational space for people of all ages and abilities.
Scope
400m³ of bulk earthworks
Construction of 670m² of concrete footpaths
Construction of 60 metres of timber-look concrete retaining walls
Installation of playground equipment, including three cubby houses with multi-level rock climbing walls, balance bridges, totem climbing pole, cargo net, slide pole and balancing beam
Installation of swing sets comprising two junior/senior swing sets, one bird’s nest swing and one disability-accessible swing
Construction of a wet play area with water wheel, funnels, concrete water trough and hand pumps
Construction of two park shelters
Laying of 2,920m² of Zoysia mixture and couch turf
Hydromulching of disturbed areas surrounding the park
Realignment of the existing creek bed
Construction of two pedestrian bridges across the creek
Outcomes
The project site was challenged by an extreme weather event resulting in extensive flooding which caused the water levels to rise. To ensure stability of the park and allow works to continue safely, JMac implemented innovative construction methodologies including excavating footings into the subgrade, encasing them in steel and pouring footings while simultaneously undertaking vacuum excavations. These proactive measures enabled the successful completion of the project despite challenging ground conditions.
